15 Months ago I was at my highest weight… EVER. Yes I have had 3 kids, lost the baby weight and then gained it all back plus some. I should have known better, a career change meant working from home 3-4 days a week. And well that means no commute (hooray for not having to take the train for 2 hours a day, but that also meant I was walking less) and easy access to the kitchen and a daily hot chocolate to help keep me warm. So slowly my weight crept up and up and up until I weighed more not pregnant then I did here:
I had low energy, and trust me when I say I need all the energy I can get to keep up with the 3 kids. Clothes didn’t fit anymore, and I knew I needed to make a change. Fast forward 15 months and I am 30lbs lighter, 2 sizes smaller and my old clothes fit again. There were no instant results, but slow and steady progress as I made my way back to a healthier weight. Now I would not have achieved this success all on my own, and one of the biggest tools that has helped me is my cell phone. Yes that’s right my cell phone helped me lose weight, and I am going to let you know how.
How My Cell Phone Helped Me Lose 30 lbs
1 – Goal Setting – Setting realistic goals is an important part of accomplishing any task. When I started focusing more on me 15 months ago I would have loved to lose 30lbs in 6 months and be done with it. But that is just not realistic and so many people think that weight loss will come quickly. Well it took a year and a half to put on the weight why would I expect it to come off any faster. When picking a goal set something that is challenging but truly obtainable to help set yourself up for success right from the start. My work was taking part in a HealthyWage challenge where you can enter either as a time or individually to win money for weight loss. This was a great app that let me select a realistic goal for myself and track my progress all the way through. Plus the pay out at the end when I met my goal was a nice little bonus! In the app you do regular weigh-ins and it will tell you your progress to your goal and how much you have to go reach your target.
2 – Tracking – A big part of my plan to become healthier again was to get moving. Sitting at my computer desk all day, in my house… well let’s just say my step count needed some work. So I borrowed a FitBit from a friend, and then ultimately bought a FitBit Charge 2 for myself because I loved it so much, and started tracking my steps. Connecting my FitBit fitness tracker to my phone was simple and quick. Once I started tracking it was easy to see that I was active in the morning getting the kids out the door and in the evening, but between 9-5… not so much. I used the FitBit App to set up hourly reminders to get me moving every hour, even for a quick 5 minute break from my computer to do a couple of laps of my house. Also apps like Carrot where you can earn SCENE points, AEROPLAN Miles, PETRO Points, and more when you reach your step goal (based on your average steps per day) are great motivators.
3 – Motivation and connection – Now it is easy to make changes for a few days or even a few weeks. The challenge comes from sustaining those changes over the long term and that is where motivation, determination consistency and connection come in. In the FitBit App you can connect with other friends that have FitBits and encourage each other and have friendly challenges for who can get the most steps in a week. I am also part of a few Facebook groups where I can connect with others to ask questions about fitness and weight loss, and to share tasty recipes too. On days when I don’t feel motivated or am slipping back into old habits I know I can reach out to them for support and suggestions
4 – Organization – Staying organized is key to success, because even if you are motivated but fail to plan, you plan to fail. I use my smart phone to help me say organized, on track and reach my fitness goals. At my gym, OrangeTheory Fitness, I am able to use their app to book my fitness classes and add it to my calendar on my phone with 2 taps. I like to book my classes a week at a time because once I am booked in I am not likely to cancel, but if I wait to book last minute or say I am just going to show up… well it is a lot easier to talk yourself out of going. Nutrition is a big part of weight loss as well, and I would have never reached the 30lbs weight loss milestone if I had not changed the way I was eating. Apps like Flipp made it so easy to find sales on fruits and veggies, create sharable grocery lists, and help meal plan. I was able increase my fruit and vegetable intake significantly without breaking our grocery budget thanks to quick and easy price matching from my phone.
So in 15 months I have lost 30 lbs and fit back into clothes I have not worn in a very long time. Friends, family and coworkers have commented on how I look healthier. And heck I FEEL healthier too. As great as my accomplishment has been so far, I am not done yet and my phone will be with me every step of the way as I set and smash new goals in 2018.
