As I was thinking of the next craft to do with Bee, I got to thinking about what WeeBee could enjoy too.  As I sifted through the craft box, I came up with a ‘busy ball’.  Bee, who is almost 3 loved creating them with me, and WeeBee who is over 1 really liked playing with them.  Of course supervision is MANDATORY with these as some have small parts.  They are very easy to make and you’ll likely find you have enough materials in your craft box to create a few without making a trip out.

You are not limited to the items on the materials list, use any type of material you have.  Consider fabrics, buttons, shoe laces etc.  For each ball you will need glue.  Pick a glue that dries relatively fast.  I had Bee help with some of the balls as like most kids, she loves to create.  We were able to make 4 busy balls in total.

Materials I used;

  • pipe cleaners
  • Fun Fur (any type of wool will work, this one is just extra fuzzy!)
  • stickers
  • rhinestones
  • felt
  • Styrofoam balls
  • glue
  • scissors

For the first one we placed glue around the Styrofoam ball then added felt.  The felt was large enough to cover the whole ball, plus some to ‘bunch’ at the top, where we tied some string to hold it together.

The next one was very easy, just place glue around the entire ball and wrap Fun Fur (or any wool) around, covering the entire ball.

Next, we used foam stickers as they ‘pop’ out more then regular stickers, creating some texture.  We also glued some rhinestones around the ball.  This one is WeeBee’s favourite.

The last one did not require glue, just stick the ends of the pipe cleaner in the Styrofoam, wrapping it around.  Use multiple pipe cleaners.  This one is Bee’s favourite.  She really enjoyed making this one, and then continued to hold onto it, loving the colours and talking about how she made it.

These were a lot of fun to make and WeeBee had a blast with them.  Although, she didn’t really like the Fun Fur ball, it was a little too fuzzy for her, lol.  I pack these away and bring them out occasionally when it’s raining or we need some down time.  While WeeBee examines the feel of the balls, Bee enjoys describing them, so they are effective for each age group in our house.
