Pea Soup with Ham and Sweet Potatoes Recipe

It’s December and we’re sticking with trying to feed our families something other than pizza, even among all the other errands and parties and things, right? I know I showed you a soup earlier in the month, but it really is such a simple way to get a meal on the table with very little effort on anyone’s part. And since I’m also on a deadline and still have plenty of things to do before Sunday morning, let’s keep it short and simple today, shall we?

Split pea soup with Ham

2 cups of split peas
half a small onion
250 g of smoked ham
6 cups of water
2 bay leaves
salt and pepper to taste

This particular soup is a favorite at our house (made all the more delicious when offered by a set of 4 year old hands). The recipe as I’m about to describe it, is how we make it when we’re in a rush. You can certainly get much fancier and a lot more complicated with it, if you were so inclined. Ok, here goes. Are you ready?

Put the split peas in a slow cooker or your pot. Coarsely chop the onion and the ham. Throw those in too. Add the water and the bay leaves. Cook on low in your slow cooker for 4-6 hours (or perhaps even all day if you happen to be at work and have left the cooker on since you left in the morning). If you’re cooking stove top, then bring the whole thing to a boil and then reduce to a simmer and simmer for about 2 hours.

Remove the bay leaves. Puree with a hand blender.

In this batch, I used mostly green split peas because I thought it would be festive. You could add a bit of roasted red pepper at the end to brighten it up. Sometimes I use a blend of green, yellow, and red split peas. Sometimes I add a sweet potato or two as well. You can spice it with a bit of cumin and cinnamon and ginger if you’d like, or maybe a bit of celery and thyme. So many choices! Usually, we keep it simple, though.

Wishing you all a warm and wonderful, joyful and laughter-filled holiday weekend!

I love pea soup made with ham bones, the taste is fantastic. Eaten with chunks of fresh home made bread it can’t be beaten for a winter meal.

  2. Never thought about adding sweet potato to pea soup but I am sure it would be a nice addition. Thanks for the recipe!
