What do you need to Make a Watermelon Baby Carriage:
Now looking at creating a fruit center piece can seem overwhelming however this one is simple, and easy to make as I kept it very basic. Now you don’t need fancy tools to make this carved watermelon for baby shower. As this baby carriage made out of a watermelon can be made simply using a sharp knife that you already have in your kitchen!
- Watermelon (choose a size based on the number of guests)
- Pineapple
- Grapes
- Strawberries
- Blueberries
- Raspberries
- Cantaloupe or Honeydew
- Oranges
- KiwiThese are the fruit we choose but you really can choose any fruits to put inside the melon baby carriage. The baby carriage made out of fruit is a great option for guests who are trying to avoid all those sweets that are typically found at a baby shower.
How To Make A Baby Carriage Fruit Salad Bowl
1 – Shopping – Head to your local grocery store or market to pick up a variety of fruit. You will need 1 watermelon, don’t automatically pick the biggest one there, the larger the melon the more fruit salad you need to fill it. Medium sized watermelons tend to work best for this project. Other fruit suggestions include pineapple, grapes, strawberries, blueberries, Cantaloupe, Honey Dew Melon, oranges, and kiwi. You will need 1 watermelon, and 1 round fruit for the “baby’s” head (a small melon or large orange would work)
2 – Carve the watermelon – there are MANY ways you can carve the watermelon, while some are super fancy, I choose a simple round design so any beginner could create this amazing watermelon baby carriage. No matter what you choose, start by carving off a small bit of the watermelon with a sharp knife along the bottom to give it a flat surface so it won’t roll around. For this one, a simple design was used where approximately 2/3 of the top half of the watermelon was removed to make a baby carriage shape. Then carve out the inside of the watermelon into bite sized pieces, you can use a [easyazon_link identifier=”B00004OCM4″ locale=”CA” tag=”litmiskat-20″]melon baller[/easyazon_link] if you have one on hand.
3 – Chop the fruit – Wash and prepare the rest of the fruit. For the fruit salad that will be inside the carriage bite sized pieces work best. You can cut strawberries in half so that they fit better. For the melon or pineapple there was a mix of slices for around the base of the carriage and bite size pieces for the fruit salad.
4 – Make the Face – In this case the watermelon baby carriage with cantaloupe baby used pieces of grapes were used for the eyes, and a piece of melon and strawberry were trimmed to make a soother. All the pieces were held in place with toothpicks. I have also seen many Baby Watermelon Fruit Bowl where the person has used an actual soother and just carved a hole to fit it in to on the face. The “bonnet” was made of the mesh that is used to protect the fruit during transport. Adding the decorative detail of the bonnet also means that you don’t have to worry about making ears. There are lots of face options that you can create for the baby shower watermelon carriage, the design is all up to you and how creative you are feeling!
5 – Assemble and serve – Place the watermelon on a serving tray. Mix the bit size pieces of fruit and fill the watermelon until 1/2 – 2/3 full. Place in the face and then add in the rest of the fruit salad. Add the rest of the fruit around the base of the watermelon. The head of the pineapple makes a great “handle” for the carriage. You can add details like carriage wheels if your wish.
6 – Add Wheels – While I choose not to add wheels it is a simple addition you can choose to make to your watermelon baby recipe. For wheels you can use orange slices at the bottom of the watermelon and attach with tooth picks. Add a lime for the inner part of the wheel and a grape on the end of the tooth pick.
Tips to Create the Best Baby Carriage Made out of Watermelon:
- You want to carve the watermelon the night before or day of if you can to ensure you create the best and freshest baby shower fruit baby carriage. If made too far in advance the watermelon will dry out. The baby watermelon carving is best if the watermelon is bought fresh and close to the date of the baby shower.
