One of the most fun parts of becoming a mom has been establishing some fun family traditions with my kids. Some revolve around birthdays like decorating a “birthday chair” with streamers that the birthday girl/boy gets to sit in. Others are around giving back during the holidays by adopting-a-family to help make their Christmas a little brighter. However some of my favourite traditions come in the form of our Family Photo Traditions. Photos that we can keep to remind us of special times and to look back on as the kids get older. I am going to share with you some fun and creative family photo traditions that will hopefully inspire you to create your own
Family Photo Tradition Ideas
1 – Baby In the Stocking – now this family photo tradition only works when your kids are babies, unless you have HUGE Christmas stockings. But these are still some of my favourite 1st Christmas photos of the kids
2 – Easter Egg Hunt – In my family the Easter Egg hunt is just not for the little kids. My generation, so my sister, husband and all of my cousins also take part in this fun family tradition. It is a great way for the cousins to get together and have a little fun. Of course afterwards we do a big group photo with the whole family
3 – Thanksgiving Gatherings – Many people think of Christmas time as a great time for family photos however Thanksgiving offers some great Fall colours as a pretty backdrop. In our family Christmas is such a busy time that not everyone gets together at the same time, but for Thanksgiving everyone comes together and if the weather cooperates you get some great family shots like this.
4 – First day of School Recreation – Find a first day of school picture from your childhood, and see if you can recreate it with your children. I was able to recreate this first day of school photo that I had with my Grandfather with my Son and Hubs. Same street, same house (don’t worry we live there) just 28 years difference!
The best part about these family photo tradition is that they are easy and create fun lasting memories. You don’t need to have the perfect pose, or a professional photographer to capture the memories. Because really when is the last time your whole family got together for family photos? So don’t stress about it being “perfect” instead just capture the moment as it happens. For most of us that means pulling out our cell phones to snap and share pictures.
Cell phone cameras have come a LONG way over the years and there are some amazing cameras out there now. If you are looking for the best cell phones with a camera that is up to the job of capturing family memories The Mobile Shop has a full selection of smart phones and the advisors would be happy to go over the differences between the different phones so you can find one that is right for you. Plus you can price match at The Mobile Shop so you always know you are getting the best deal.

5 – Canada Day Family Photos – This has been one of our longest family photo traditions that we started when we just had 1 kid (it is hard to even remember back then, luckily I have photo proof of that time!). We all get our Canada Day shirts and snap a family photo. It is amazing to see just how much the kids change every year.
6 – Asleep under the Christmas Tree – Part of our Christmas traditions include a full day of Christmas baking. We normally go to one of my Mom’s friends houses who has beautifully decorated house. While the kids enjoy baking when it comes to nap time, there is no better place to nap then beside the tree.
7 – First Day of school picture in picture – I saw this idea online and LOVE the look of it. Taking a picture of the first day of school of the child holding a picture from the previous year first day of school. A unique way to document a new school year.
8 – Monthly Baby Photos – It is easy to find monthly markers at many stores now for documenting milestones as your baby grows. I picked up a set of Peel and Stick monthly stickers that I used with Baby Roo to take photos to mark her growth during her first year.
9 – Mother’s Day photos – Mother’s Day is a pretty low key affair around here, no big get togethers or plans. Just sleeping in and spending time together. However there is one thing on the to do list – for me to have a photo with the kids. Too often moms are left behind the camera, and this is one way that we make sure I am in the photos too.
These family photo traditions are a fun way to stay connected to our family. I mean who wouldn’t love wearing some bunny ears and taking a entertaining picture. It is a good reminder not to take ourselves to seriously and have some fun with extended family. Once you have the photos it is great to share them with friends and family via text message or social media. Our family it spread out across Canada so sharing photos is how we stay connected even we don’t see each other as often as we would like. The easiest way to do that is to take the photos with your phone and share right from there. If you are looking for a cell phone plan to fit your lifestyle, and not break the bank, The Mobile Shop offers the latest smart phones and plans from all of Canada’s major carriers as well as offering their own brand PC® Mobile.
