Olympic Inspired Food Idea – Easy and Fun Olympic Torch Cupcakes

The Olympics will be upon us soon, and why not celebrate them by creating a tasty, festive cupcake the whole family can enjoy?  Make it a tradition just like the real Olympic flame and make them for every Summer or Winter Games.  The kids will love making them – they are bright, fun and delicious!

They can be made a little differently every time if you’d like to mix it up.  You could use a yellow (lemon) cake to further enhance the flame or use some candies on top of the icing to give a sturdier fire look.  Whatever you choose do you, everyone is sure to love them!  Let’s take a look on how to make these Olympic Torch Cupcakes.

  • white icing
  • red and yellow food colouring
  • ice cream cones with a flat bottom

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F.
  • Place 18 ice cream cones upright into a cupcake pan.
  • Prepare the cake batter following the directions.
  • Pour the batter into the ice cream cones, filling them 2/3 of the way full.
  • Bake the torches for 15-20 minutes, or until they are lightly golden, springy when touched or a toothpick comes out clear. Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely.
  • While the torches are cooling, prepare the icing. Separate the icing into two mixing bowls. In one add about 3 drops of yellow food colouring and mix well. In the second bowl add about 3 drops of yellow and 2 drops of red food colouring and mix well (this should create orange).
  • Using a spatula or knife frost the cupcakes starting with the yellow icing, make waves and peaks for some fun detailing. Once the top of the cupcake is covered, add some orange icing to the top in different patterns, get creative! Finally when done, add one drop of red food colouring to each cupcake. This is optional as it can get messy! Blend the red food colouring slightly to create a red flame look.
