Apple pie only takes a few simple ingredients: double recipe pie crust, crisp apples, flour, sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon, salt and butter. That’s it!
There are many different types of apples that you can use to make apple pie. When choosing you want to pick a nice crisp apple. If you use a variety of apple that is soft, your pie filling will be too soft. Popular apples for baking are: Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, golden delicious, Cortland, and Macintosh. You can use all of one type or a combination.
Homemade Apple Pie Recipe from scratch directions
First to make this homemade apple pie you will need to make the pie crust (click for the recipe and step by step instructions). You will need a double recipe since apple pie has a top and bottom crust. The key to apple pie is flakey crust. Click here for a tried and true flakey crust that is absolutely perfect for apple pie. Alternatively you could buy a premade crust to use if you don’t want to make one yourself.
Line a 9 inch pie pan with the first rolled out crust.
Roll out the top crust. But leave it in the wax paper until you have filled the pie.
In a small bowl mix the flour, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt. Set aside.
Peel, core and thinly slice your apples. The recipe calls for 8 cups but you do not need to be exact. I usually select around 8 medium sized apples, 10 small apples or 5 large apples.
As soon as the apples are sliced pour the flour and sugar mixture over the apples and gently combine until the apples are coated. Pour into pie pan.
Arrange the apple slices so that none of them are sticking out or hanging over the edge.
Cut up small cubes of butter and place evenly over the apples.
Carefully center the top crust over the apples.
To place the top crust on without it falling apart can be tricky. Some people roll it onto the rolling pin. But I leave the rolled out crust on a piece of waxed paper and gently flip it onto the pie. Its so frustrating when the top crust falls apart. But the waxed paper trick has saved me so much time and frustration.
Fold the edges of the crust under and pinch to seal. The filling will bubble quite a bit while baking so you want to seal the crust together fairly well. Then pinch the edges of the crust to make any kind of design you like.
If you want to add some extra flair, use mini cookie cutters and the extra scraps of crust to make some pretty designs.

Make sure you cut some slits of pierce the top of the crust. These are important so that the steam can get out while baking.
When decorating the top of your pie, just have fun. It wont look perfect once is comes out of the oven so just have fun and try different things.
Lightly sprinkle the pie with sugar. Not only does this taste delicious is makes the pie look really pretty when baked.
Preheat your oven to 425 degrees. Apple pies almost always leak some of the gooey filling so place your pie onto a cookie sheet to catch any spills.
Cover the edges of your crust with tinfoil to keep the edges from over browning.
Bake at 425 for approximately 45 minutes. After the first 30 minutes remove the tin foil and bake for the remaining 15 minutes. Once the crust is a nice golden brown and you can hear the filling bubbling it is done.
Remove from the oven and let cool for at least 30 minutes before serving.
