Traveling is such an amazing experience. It gives you a chance to participate in activities you wouldn’t otherwise have the chance to partake in. Recently we went to the Island of Cayo Lavantando in the Dominican Republic and stayed at the Luxury Bahia Principe Cayo Levantado Don Pablo Collection Resort. Hubs and I had an amazing time, and it was the perfect place to relax and unwind for our 10 year wedding anniversary. The resort is beautiful, you have to check out the rooms. We got to stay in a Beach front Villa and falling asleep to the sound of the ocean waves was so relaxing. Although the Bahia Principe Cayo Levantado Resort is a small island just off the mainland near Samana, Dominican Republic there are still lots of activities to take part in. Bahia Principe Cayo Levantado Resort Activities
A couple of things to remember about the Bahia Principe Cayo Levantado Resort when planning your vacation there. It is an adults only resort, so this is not the spot for a family vacation. If a family vacation is what you are looking for then check out Beaches Turks & Caicos Resort. You can fly into the Samana airport and then it will be a 45 minute to 1 hour scenic ride to get to the ferry which takes you to the Bahia Principe Cayo Levantado Resort. The ferry ride over is short (5 minutes), and it runs at regular intervals all day long. There is no cost to use the ferry to get back and forth to the mainland.
Now just because Bahia Principe Cayo Levantado Resort is on an island doesn’t mean there are not tons of activities that you can take part in both on the island or nearby. That was one of the things we loved the most about Bahia Principe Cayo Levantado Resort is that you could set the pace. The resort is spread out enough that you never feel crowded and if you only want to sit on the beach all day you can do that with lots of space. If you prefer to do some excursions, participate in resort activities, or take in the entertainment then you can do that too.

Whale Samana Review – Whale Watching
As soon as we booked our trip and I realized that we would be in the Dominican Republic during Humpback Season, which runs from Mid January to the end of March, I knew I wanted to go whale watching. I did a lot of research into different options as I wanted to find a reputable operator who would be able to tell me about the whales and make it an educational experience not just a sight seeing one. After doing a lot of reading I decided on booking a tour with Whale Samana and I am so glad I did.
You can watch the North Atlantic Humpback whale on a custom built 55 foot whale watching vessel with Whale Samana. The boat offers sunny and shady areas on board, a snack bar and plenty of whale gifts and memorabilia. Whale Samana tour is a great excursion to take while at Bahia Principe Cayo Levantado Resort that allows you to “meet” some of the local whales. The tours are lead by Kim Beddall and her friendly crew who openly share their knowledge about the whales and the Dominican Republic. They have a variety of educational materials you can use to learn more about the whales and provide insightful commentary during the tour.
If the whales are cooperating and they are able to snap a photo of their tail, they will compare it to the extensive library they have on the Samana whale and tell you more about the specific whales you had a chance to see. The team loved getting questions from everyone and made sure to take time to give answers and or share pictures etc from the resource books they have on the boat. Plus they share photos on the Whale Samana Facebook page from each trip. Here are some from our whale watching outing 
Whale Samana is easy to book ahead of time online, and out down a deposit on a tour. I reserved our spot on a tour near the beginning of our trip in case we wanted to go back out a second time (or happened to not see whales the first time then you can go back again for free). Once we arrived for our vacation we got a confirmation email with all the details regarding pick up times for the tour, paying the balance for the tour etc. For the tour the Whale Samana boat will pick you up from the public dock right right beside the resort on the Cayo Levantado Island, so you don’t have to worry about getting to the main land for this excursion.
I had an amazing time on the Whale Samana tour. They provided sea bands for anyone who wanted them while on the tour. I would take another Whale Samana our in a heartbeat, and hopefully will get the chance again in the future.
Visit the Spa
In the midst of a tropical paradise is where you will find the gorgeous Bahia Spa located at Cayo Levantado Resort. The spa offers many different services and treatments, so you will be sure to find one that you will enjoy. You can eliminate tensions and pamper yourself with a variety of different amazing treatments, or even enjoy a massage in an an ocean side cabana. Choose from Bubble beds, Turkish baths, a Finnish Sauna or many other options at the Cayo Levantado Resort Spa.
You can visit the gazebos located on the beach and get your hair braided by a professional, or have a beauty salon service at the spa.
Participate in Sports and Resort Activities
There are a variety of different sports that you can participate in at the Luxury Bahia Principe Cayo Levantado Resort. You can participate in something you have done before like Pilates or Tennis or you can try snorkeling or paddle surfing. Visit the Activity Center to book a Catamaran or learn about scuba diving. There daily activities at the resort including dance lessons, darts, aquafit and more that you can take part in.
Visit the Beach
Ok this may seem like an obvious one, but one of the great things about Bahia Principe Cayo Levantado Resort is that you have 3 of beaches to choose from. There are 2 on the resort. One that faces East out to the ocean offers some larger waves depending on the day and an amazing view. The slope to get to deeper water on this beach is a little more steep (but nothing crazy) so you can get into a good depth for swimming without having to go too far from shore. 
The West facing beach is more protected from the full force of the ocean and offers a more gradual slope into the water. There are a few rock formations just off the beach that you can swim to for snorkeling.
The west side of the island also has a large public beach with beautiful white sand and offers excellent swimming as well. You should be sure to check out this beach as well.
You can relax on a hammock, participate in watersports, or unwind under the giant palm trees with a drink in your hand.
Dance the Night Away – Performances and Entertainment
Dance to the beat of some amazing island rhythms. There is nightly entertainment by the main building of the resort with a variety of shows and performances. 
Once a week they also have the White Beach Party. On this special evening the resort takes over the public beach in the evening and turns it into a sea of white – white sand, white lights, white furniture. They have everything you need for a fun night out including performances, we got to see a flame thrower, great music and a full bar.
Explore The Island and Samana
Take some time to walk the Cayo Levantado island. the Resort offers some great views no matter what side of the island you are on. Taking a leisurely stroll around the resort will only take an hour to get around the whole thing.
On the public beach there are also vendors who sell everything from clothing and jewelry to sculptures and paintings. Take an hour to explore the small market right on the island.
You can also take the ferry over to the main land to explore the island of the Dominican Republic. The town of Samana is a short taxi ride away if you want to do some more shopping.
Go on an Adventure
Feel the rush of the wind in your hair as you speed through the countryside on an ATV Adventure or have an amazing time zip lining and take in the views of the beautiful island. There are many excursions you can take part in on the main land. So if you are looking for a little adventure I am sure you will be able to find something to suit your tastes. You can book on your own, or there are staff at the resort who can help you find the excursion to fit what you are looking for.
Although the Bahia Principe Cayo Levantado Resort is on its own small island we were never bored during our week long vacation.
