Gift Ideas For Parents With A Baby In The Hospital

The time when Monkey was in the NICU was one of the hardest time in my life. There is no worst feeling then leaving the hospital to go home without your baby in tow and feeling helpless to make them get better.  Since that time many people have asked me what can they do to help other parents who have a baby in the hospital.  Recently I got to put my advice back into action when a friend of mine had her first child and he needed to stay in the NICU for 2 weeks.  I knew right away that when she was ready I would love to go visit her in the NICU because it can be a very isolating place and most people don’t understand the emotional toll that it takes on you while you were there.  If you are looking for a baby shower gift idea for someone who has a baby in the hospital here are some gifts that I can guarantee will be much appreciated for them.

Snacks – The days in the NICU are long and as parents you are very focused on what is going on with your babies schedule.  Everything revolves around feeding times and the chance to get to hold your little one.  It can be easy to forget to eat as you’re so distracted by what else is going on.  Many NICU parents spent almost all their waking hours at the hospital leaving little time for food preparation so having some quick snacks on hand at the hospital make keeping your energy levels up much easier. [easyazon_link identifier=”B003M5OOFM” locale=”CA” tag=”litmiskat-20″]Granola Bars[/easyazon_link] are and easy snack that travels well, or a batch of homemade muffins would be welcomed with open arms.

Drinks – Staying hydrated is also very important for a number of reasons. The air in the hospital tends to be dry so you need to keep up your fluids, but also as a new mom if you are recovering from your labor and birth and trying to breastfeed or pump for the new baby drinking it can be hard to remember to get enough fluids.  Drinking just plain water over and over can also be boring. Pick up a reuseable [easyazon_link identifier=”B072LNHW9F” locale=”CA” tag=”litmiskat-20″]Water Bottle[/easyazon_link] and [easyazon_link identifier=”B06XR8LS2L” locale=”CA” tag=”litmiskat-20″]Drink Mix[/easyazon_link] that can be added to a bottle of water to add some variety and flavor to their drinks is a nice way to help stressed out parents make sure that they are still taking care of themselves.

Nursing tops – Getting the hang of breastfeeding and pumping is hard enough when you have a healthy newborn but having a baby in the NICU take that stress to a whole new level.  Depending on the NICU you may not have very much privacy at your babies bedside and having to leave your baby to  pump is a hard choice for moms to make.  Having some nursing tops or a tank top like The Naked Nursing Tank (which makes every top a nursing top) can make breastfeeding and pumping more comfortable for the new mom.  Comfortable clothing to help you easily feed your baby or pump in can allow moms to relax just that little bit more during a stressful time.

You can find the Naked Nursing Tank on Amazon:

Special treat –  With so much focus on the new baby and their help me it’s nice to provide a little something just for the parents.  In my case a little chocolate goes a long way to helping to lift my spirits even during stressful times so I included a chocolate bar in my gift bag.  You could also pick up a book or magazine to help parents pass the time as well.

Parking – One thing that is often overlooked when parents have a baby in the hospital is the associated cost of the hospital stay.  While in Canada we do not have to pay for the health care itself there are still costs associated with being at the hospital.  The biggest cost is likely hospital parking.  We all know how expensive it can be to park at a hospital for a few hours, so having a group come together to pull some money to buy a hospital parking pass is something that I know the family will not forget.  Just touch base with the family first to find out what the parking options are for the hospital.
