Pumpkin Decorating Ideas – Mummy Pumpkins

Carving pumpkins can be fun, but it can be messy and while the kids can help with the design part, when it comes to the actually cutting of the pumpkins they are stuck sitting on the sidelines.  Here is a pumpkin decorating idea that the whole family can be involved it and you won’t need to worry about pumpkin guts!  Mummy Pumpkins are easy to make and will last a lot longer then the organic kind!  Here is how to make your own Mummy Pumpkin to help spook out your decor.Pumpkin-Decorating-Ideas-Mummy-Pumpkins

Materials Needed:Pumpkin decorating ideas Mummy pumpkin 2

  • Plastic or Foam Pumpkins – I found mine at the dollar store
  • 1/2 yard of white fabric
  • Modpodge – found at your local craft store
  • Large Googly Eyes
  • Paint Brushes
  • Glue or Glue Gun
  • White Spray Paint (optional)
  • Cardboard (optional)

Directions

1 – Tape of the stems on the pumpkins to protect them and spray paint your pumpkins white.  This step is optional, if you don’t do it you may need to put on multiple layers of fabric so that the orange of the pumpkin does not show through.  Allow paint to dry overnightPumpkin decorating ideas Mummy pumpkin 1

2 – Tear fabric into pieces approximately 4 inches long by 1.5 inches wide.  To to this snip the edge of the fabric with scissors and then with a firm grip tear it.  Do not worry if the pieces are not perfect, you want the edges to be frayed.

3 – Attach the eyes to the pumpkin using the glue gun or glue.  I placed 2 layers of cardboard behind the eyes to make them stand out more from the pumpkin.

4 – Now it is time to start “wrapping” your Mummy Pumpkin.  Using the Modpodge and paint brush, place a piece of fabric on the pumpkin and paint it with Modpodge.  Focus more towards the centre of the fabric so that the edges have a frayed look.  Continue attaching the fabric pieces until the whole pumpkin is covered and the desired look is achieved.   Allow to dry completely over night.

  1. This is really a cute idea and I agree with you on the carving a pumpkin and how often the kids just get to sit and watch instead of being involved. That is why we use to paint faces on ours. Thanks for the great idea.
