How to Make an Easy Chocolate Oreo Cake with Kit Kats

This straightforward chocolate Oreo birthday cake is remarkably easy to assemble, which might catch you by surprise. We used a boxed cake mix to create this cake, but you could also opt for your preferred homemade cake recipe. The choice is entirely yours and depends on the time you have available.

Ensure that if you decide to use your own recipe, you bake the cakes in two 8-inch round cake pans. You also have the option to select your preferred frosting recipe, if that’s your preference. In our case, we opted for pre-made vanilla frosting, but, once again, the choice is entirely yours.

If you decide to make homemade frosting, consider trying a Swiss Meringue Buttercream Recipe. It’s worth noting that boxed cake mixes can yield truly delicious cakes, just like the Easy Nerf Gun Cake we prepared for my 8-year-old son’s birthday. So, if you opt for that route, you won’t be disappointed.

Chocolate Oreo KitKat Cake Recipe Instructions

Crafting a Chocolate Oreo Kit Kat Cake is not overly complex, even though the results give the impression of hours spent on baking and decorating. This cake is essentially a boxed cake mix, with approximately 12 KitKats Bars encircling its sides.

They are secured with a ribbon to ensure the Kit Kats stay in place. This DIY Chocolate Oreo Cake can be assembled in about 1 hour. You have the option to use white chocolate KitKats to create a similar effect with your own personal touch, but for this cake, we opted to stick with the original variety.

Step One:

Bake the cake according to the box instructions, making sure that it is fully baked by sticking a toothpick into the center of the cake. Don’t overfill your pans as you want the kitkats to be a little bit taller then your cake once they are stacked. Allow cakes to cool on a wire rack before icing.

Step Two:

Crush 10 Oreos very finely with a rolling pin in a large ziploc bag (or between sheets of wax paper or parchment paper)  and mix into vanilla icing to create cookies and cream icing.

Step Three:

Use cookies and cream icing for the middle layer between the cakes.

Step Four:

Ice the outside of the cake with the chocolate frosting. Break KitKats into have so each bar gives you 2 pieces with 2 “sticks” still together. Place your kit kats pieces along the sides of the cake and tie the ribbon around it to hold them on.

Step Five:

Use a piping bag with a very large tip or a spoon to add dollops of cookies and cream icing to the top of the cake.  If your Oreos are not crushed up enough they will clog the tip. Personally in this case I found a spoon just as effective.

Step Six:

Place a large Oreo in each dollop of the Oreo frosting.

Step Seven:

Use the remaining icing to place a small amount on the back of the mini Oreos and place them around the base of the cake.

Optional Tip:

Add crushed Oreos to the cake batter to create a yummy base.
