Up Your Grilled Cheese Game with Poutine Grilled Cheese & Ham and Bacon Club Grilled Cheese Recipes

When someone says “Grilled Cheese”, what do you think of?  The plain old classic sandwich with two pieces of bread and processed cheese?  With National Grilled Cheese Day coming up on April 12th, let’s have some fun, get creative, and up our grilled cheese game with some delicious recipes.  While most people are familiar with the family favourite classic grilled cheese, we’re going to share some tasty and exciting recipes you can try at home that will have everyone asking for more!Ultimate Grilled Cheese Recipes - Poutine Grilled Cheese via www.littlemisskate.ca

Something I learned when I moved out on my own for university is that I love grilled cheese made with brick cheese rather than processed cheese.  A small change makes a BIG difference in the tastiness of your sandwich.  You can find brick cheese in several varieties at Walmart, and I enjoy the flavours and texture when you use it in grilled cheese.  And my three kids…you would think they were mice judging by how much cheese they eat!Ultimate Grilled Cheese Recipeswith brick cheese via www.littlemisskate.ca

This means when I go grocery shopping I am mindful of what I am buying to try to keep my grocery bill under control.  Walmart helps me stay on budget with a good selection of groceries at reasonable prices.  For these recipes I picked up Great Value Cheeses retailing for under $5 (450 g brick) available in several varieties including Mozzarella, Old Cheddar and Farmers Marble, and a pack of Great Value Bacon for under $3 (375 g).  Because we all know… bacon makes everything better!Ultimate Grilled Cheese Recipes - Poutine Grilled Cheese via www.littlemisskate.ca

Poutine Grilled Cheese

Ingredients

8 slices Great Value Old Cheddar brick Cheese

2 hash browns

4 Strips Great Value Bacon, cooked

¼ cup Great Value brown gravy

  1. From the short edge of the 450g brick of cheese use a knife or cheese slicer to thinly cut 8 slices of cheese
  2. Heat a non-stick pan over medium heat.  Add hash browns and cook until golden and crispy, about 15-20 minutes flipping halfway
  3. Lay 4 slices of cheese crosswise on one hash brown, top with the bacon and then layer with the remaining cheese.
  4. Place second hash brown on top, and cook on medium, covered, until cheese is melted (about 3-4 minutes)
  5. Remove from heat and let sit for 2 minutes before cutting.  Serve with warm gravy for dipping.  Enjoy!

The club sandwich also makes a tasty vegetarian version by leaving out the ham and bacon.  You could add sautéed mushrooms or onions to it as well.Ultimate Grilled Cheese Recipes - Ham, Bacon Club Grilled Cheese via www.littlemisskate.ca

Both of these sandwiches were a hit at my house. The kids gobbled down the poutine grilled cheese, and I received rave reviews from my 2-year-old with many “More Mommy, please?” from her.  And my husband loved the Ham and Bacon Club Grilled Cheese. It was so tasty, he didn’t even notice there was spinach in it!Ultimate Grilled Cheese Recipes via www.littlemisskate.ca

Other suggestions include a Chicken and Waffles Grilled Cheese  or a Turkey, Bacon and Avocado version of the Club! Whatever your choice, on April 12th, break out your frying pan and get creative in the kitchen by trying out some different varieties of grilled cheese with Great Value ingredients you can find at your local Walmart!

What is your favourite way to enjoy grilled cheese?
